It is the first time since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that Tehran has sent military ships through the strategic waterway.
The 1,100-ton Alvand class frigate (also called the Saam, or Vosper Mk5 type) is part of five of this class in the Iranian navy. Built in the U.K., by Vosper Thornycroft, the vessels were originally armed with nine Short Brothers Sea Can anti-air missiles and five Sea Killer anti-ship missiles. According to news reports, these have been replaced with 4 chinese C-802 ASM. Its home port is Bandar Abbas in the Persian Gulf.
