Startup Senegal Airlines wants to increase the size of its fleet in the next two years as it looks to expand its route structure into Asia and Europe.
The airline, which began operations with two Airbus A320s last month, is the successor to Air Senegal, which suspended operations in April 2009. The government quickly decided to mount a new effort to create a flag carrier, formally launching the process to build Senegal Airlines in May 2009, working with a private investor.
The new carrier started operations to six destinations from its hub at Dakar on Jan. 25. The network covers flights to Conakry, Guinea (the first destination operated); Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire; Banjul, the Gambia; Bamako, Mali; Nouakchott, Mauritania, and Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The first expansion will come Feb. 14 with flights to Bissau, Guinea-Bissau and Niamey, Niger.
