Mexican low-fare carrier InterJet has signed a contract for 15 Sukhoi Superjet regional jets.
The deal, which also includes five options, is an important customer commitment for the Russian program after Alitalia in December opted for the Embraer regional jet over the Sukhoi product, even though Russian officials thought they had secured the order. Deliveries to the Mexican airline should commence in the second half of 2012, the company said on Jan. 17.
The airline will operate the aircraft alongside its Airbus A20 narrowbodies.
The first Superjets are due to enter operational service soon in Russia, although the date for European Aviation Safety remains uncertain.
SuperJet International, the Sukhoi and Alenia Aeronautic joint venture providing support for the Russian aircraft says the Mexican operator has agreed to the “SuperCare” sustainment contract.
Sukhoi says its firm order book now stands at 170 aircraft.
