The 1st Panzer Division is deploying to Afghanistan but that does not mean it is bringing its Leopard 2s along.

Between October 2010 and March 2012, the division is leading German overseas deployments. In this capacity, it is responsible for the generation, training and deployment of 2,000 of the 7,000 German troops on overseas deployments, mainly in Afghanistan and Kosovo. It will support 5,000 troops deployed abroad in 2011-2012. Forward elements have already been deployed and the rest will follow in coming weeks after they have completed their deployment training.
In Afghanistan, they will join 640 paratroopers of Luftlandebrigade (Airborne Brigade) 26 "Saarland" who are being deployed to Kunduz and Mazar-e-Sharif by the beginning of February (photo).
